# Talk to an agent

> Ask an agent one question or hold a conversation with it from the terminal, and pick it up later.

`graph ask` runs one turn and exits. `graph chat` keeps the conversation open. Both start with the built-in `chat` agent unless you name another.

## Ask one question

```bash theme={null}
graph ask --agent release_notes \
  "What shipped since v0.15.0?"
```

The answer streams to stdout. Usage and a resume command follow on stderr:

```text theme={null}
3 calls · 12k in / 840 out · $0.04
resume with `graph chat --thread 0b9c2f6e-…`
```

Piped input is added to the message:

```bash theme={null}
git diff main | graph ask "Review this diff"
```

## Hold a conversation

```bash theme={null}
graph chat release_notes
```

The prompt shows which agent you are talking to. Switch agents mid-conversation with `/agent <name>`, list them with `/agent`, and leave with `/quit`.

## Pick it up later

Add `--thread` to continue the most recent conversation, or `--thread <id>` for a specific one. On `graph ask`, put it after the message:

```bash graph chat theme={null}
graph chat --thread
```

```bash graph ask theme={null}
graph ask "And the release before?" \
  --thread
```
